Must for the starters
A must read for archery enthusiasts, taking up the sport. The book lays out the basics, and something really important for the beginners, "common mistakes or pitfalls". Gives a good direction of where to go and what not to do in a hurry of taking up the sport. Very good toddler's steps.

archy and mehitabel are as unique as hamlet!
picture two characters who inhabit the newsroom of a daily newspaper only in the night hours in the 1920s and 30s. a cat who believes and acts as if she s the reincarnation of cleopatra and a cockroach who writes his boss - that s in quotes - who s a reporter on the paper. but writing comes so hard that it is, well n-o-t what is written in the - booklist - review in amazon s internet review. i quote from the review - the cockroach, archy, couldn t hold down shift and hit another key. - wronggggg.,.,., i quote from don marquis s description - he did not see us, and we watched him. he would climb painfully upon the framework of the machine and cast himself with all his force upon a key, head downward, and his weight and the impact of the blow were just sufficient to operate the machine, one slow letter after another. he could not operate the capital letters... - can t you just cry with pain as you picture archy, or rathe! ! r, don marquis, writing his material, any and all material , for us. and suggesting that many writers must suffer as did archy to give us their thoughts, their beliefs, their observations, their opinions, their joys, their sufferings.... b-u-y- t-h-e b-o-o-k .,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,., - imagine caps, or parentheses - i can't do it, you see....

Argentina (Culture Shock!)
Published in Paperback by Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co. (May, 2002)
Author: Fiona Adams
Average review score:

Just the ticket for American travelers
My husband and I recently took a trip to Argentina, reading this book before we went, and bringing it along to reference while we were there. With the obvious exception of economic information (the economic crisis there wasn't in full swing until after this book was published), the information presented was dead on. Because of it, we were way ahead of the game in terms of understanding the local customs, habits, and manners, and we felt much more at ease in this new environment than many of our fellow travellers did. The book is written in a clear and amusing way, making the fascinating Argentinian culture acessable to all. One would expect a certian amount of the information to be out of date, but even so it seemed pretty accurate, right down to some of the popular rock musicians. A must read for anyone planning on a trip there!

Art Across Time
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Companies (January, 2002)
Author: Laurie Adams

A sumptuous aesthetic feast !!!
I have been looking for a book like this for a long time. Laurie Schneider Adams combines detailed historical analysis with a stunning visual portrayal of the great masterpieces of western art. In a word, her book is itself a work of art. Intellectually and artistically the book is complete. I most enjoyed her discussion of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, my favorite period in the history of western art. However, everything is covered in this book. Cave and wall paintngs of early europeans to modern french impressionism and Norman Rockwell are covered in detail and given their place in the development and history of western art. Archetecture, sculpture, and painting are each given careful attention, as are more unusual modern aesthetic expressions. Adams shows us that the history of art has its own aesthetic quality. Her book is a first rate resource that could serve both as a college text and as a personal introduction to western art. Owning the book is like having the Louvre on your bookshelf.

The Art of Playing Mythos the Cthulhu Collectable Card Game: A Tome of Arcane Knowledge
Published in Paperback by Chaosium (January, 2003)
Authors: Scott David Aniolowski, Charlie Krank, Eric Rowe, Lynn Willis, Salvatore Abbinanti, Chris Adams, Thomas Garrett Adams, Stephen Barnwell, Mike Blanchard, and Mark J. Ferrari
Average review score:

A Guide to Playing the Mythos Card Game
This book contains miscellaneous information about the Mythos collectible card game. It contains: the rules of the game, a FAQ, a short play and deck construction guide, a sort of designer's notes on the game, background information on selected cards, rules for solitaire play and creating your own adventures, a complete spoiler list for the limited edition of the game and lists of card attributes and requirements for completing adventures.

As a collector and player of the game, I found the designer's notes on the history of the game and the design philosophy to be especially interesting. Also useful to me are the short notes on the background of selected cards and the rules for creating and scoring your own adventures. The pictures of the selected cards are black & white with a paragraph of background info. Buyers should also note that there is an updated version of the rules of the game at the Chaosium website.

Art on Trial : From Whistler to Rothko
Published in Hardcover by Walker & Company (01 May, 1976)
Author: Laurie Schneider Adams
Average review score:

Art on Trial is a Winner
Art on Trial discusses various art trials, including Whistler v. Ruskin and Brancusi v. United States. The book is very readable and generally focusses on the question, "What is Art?"

The book is out of print, but would be a winner if it his the bookstores again.

Note: This book is similar to Law in the Courtroom by Vilis Inde. Inde, however deals with trials of the last 20 years. In addition, Inde's analysis is a little more in depth because he used actual transcripts of the hearings and briefs. This is a 5***** book as well.

Enjoy one or both.

Atget's Paris (TASCHEN Icons Series)
Published in Paperback by TASCHEN America Llc (15 June, 2001)
Authors: Andreas Krase, Hans Christian Adam, and Taschen
Average review score:

A beautiful yet inexpensive introduction to Atget's Paris
This is one of the more unusual books on my shelves, in that physically it is designed to bear a resemblence on its exterior to some travel guides. The photograph above doesn't do it justice. The material is kivar-like, and his famous photograph of the entrance to the Moulin Rouge is tinted in red and yellow. Inside, the photographs are arranged thematically, according such topics as Salesman and Traders on the Streets of Paris, or Trades, Shops, and Window Displays, or interiors of Parisian homes, or, my favorite, Old Paris.

As the introduction of the book points out, Atget was the great photographic recorder of Old Paris. It is to Paris of the turn of the 19th to the 20th century what Weegee was to lower Manhattan. The pictures in this book are nothing short of remarkable, and to look at them for any length of time helps transport one, to the extent that that is possible, to a world that no longer exists. This is not beautiful, genteel Paris. It isn't the Paris of Proust. It is more the Paris of Baudelaire fifty years down the road, the Paris of Toulouse-Latrec.

This without any question the finest inexpensive edition of Atget's photographs currently available, and since Atget is the predominant photographer of the Paris of a hundred years ago, the best inexpensive book of photographs of Old Paris.

Athens, Georgia: Celebrating 200 Years at the Millennium
Published in Hardcover by Community Communications Corp (October, 1999)
Authors: Conoly Hester, Albert L. Hester, Terry Allen, and Diane A. Adams
Average review score:

Profile of a Classic City
ATHENS, GEORGIA: CELEBRATING 200 YEARS AT THE MILLENNIUM is an elegant look at an elegant city. Athens is, as Conoly Hester writes, the town that education built. Home of the oldest state-chartered university in the nation, Athens honors the ideals of the Greek heritage echoed in the name it chose for itself. With sumptuous photographs by Terry Allen, this book brings to life a community rooted in the Old South but striving always, with great self-assurance, to reach for ideas that will generate the future. Through thoughtful sketches of the enterprises of Athens, Al Hester shows what continuity and creativity cam mean to civic life. Just as important have been the arts and athletics, and Conoly Hester weaves them into the lore of the town. Perhaps it is the anchoring presense of the University of Georgia that has given Athens the confidence to build from its past on the wrong side of the Civil War an enlightened city that incorporates into its psyche all the complexity, anguish and joy of 200 profoundly useful years. The Hesters have done so well by Athens that every city in America will want them to write its profile too.

Fabulous, functional and informative.
